What Does the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership Mean for Investment?

On 29 November 2023, Rajah & Tann Singapore and Steptoe & Johnson LLP organised a virtual event titled “What Does the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership Mean for Investment?”.

As the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (“CPTPP“) celebrates nearly five years in force and the UK joining this year, this is an opportune time to look into the specific provisions for investment promotion and protection under the CPTPP and their significance to both investors and State Parties. The speakers, which included Partner Matthew Koh and Foreign Counsel Vanina Sucharitkul from the International Arbitration Practice, explored the following:

  • the range of protections offered to investors under the CPTPP;
  • the claims procedure under the CPTPP;
  • what exemptions and exceptions may apply; and
  • a specific example of a potential investor-State claim under the CPTPP.
