At the Singapore Convention Week 2025 held from 25 to 29 August 2025, Rajah & Tann Singapore supported the following thought leadership events:
- Evolution and Revolution: International Disputes in the Age of Tariffs and Treaty Shifts
Conducted on 28 August 2025, the seminar looked at recent developments in public international law and investment disputes. Specifically, the panel considered how shifting treaty frameworks and trade measures are influencing international disputes. Partner Avinash Pradhan, Deputy Head of the International Arbitration Practice and Co-Head of Rajah & Tann’s South Asia Desk, was one of the speakers.
- ISDS and South-East Asia: An ICSID Perspective
Held on 27 August 2025, the session explored how investors and States in Southeast Asia can boost investment flows in the region. It also covered the following: (i) recent investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) case trends involving regional parties; (ii) the shifting legal landscape and alternative dispute resolution’s role; and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes’ (“ICSID“) evolving engagement in the region. Partner Francis Xavier, SC, Regional Head of Dispute Resolution, was one of the speakers. The event was co-organised with ICSID.
- At the Crossroads of Arbitration and Insolvency: Should Winding-Up be Stayed?
Held on 25 August 2025, the seminar tackled issues of enforceability, jurisdiction, and public policy, alongside practical implications for creditors and debtors navigating arbitration and insolvency. The speakers analysed recent judicial decisions such as the UK Privy Council’s decision in Sian Participation Corp (In Liquidation) v Halimeda International Ltd [2024] UKPC 16 to understand how Courts are navigating tensions between insolvency’s collective processes and contractual autonomy to determine the effect of arbitration agreements in insolvency. Partner Kelvin Poon, SC, Deputy Managing Partner and Head of the International Arbitration Practice, was one of the speakers. Partner Sim Kwan Kiat, Deputy Head of the Dispute Resolution Group, was the moderator. The event was co-organised with INSOL International.
- ArbitralWomen – Navigating the First 100 Days of an Arbitration: Strategies for Success
Organised on 25 August 2025, the panel discussion delved into the pivotal first 100 days of an arbitration, highlighting best practices, key procedural milestones, and common challenges encountered during this phase. The panellists offered perspectives on effective case management, jurisdictional issues, and early strategic decisions that can influence the trajectory of an arbitration. Dr Vanina Sucharitkul from the International Arbitration Practice was one of the panellists.
