IPOS Introduces Simplified Process for Requesting Examination Reports

The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (“IPOS“) has issued Circular No. 3/2024: Simplified Requests for Examination Reports and Other Legislative Amendments. The Circular introduces: (i) a simplified process for requesting examination reports based on final search results established by IPOS under the Patent Co-operation Treaty (“PCT“); and (ii) clarification on the Registrar’s publication of the forms and directions on the IPOS website.

Simplified Requests for Examination Reports

The Patents Rules 2007 have been amended from 16 August 2024 to simplify the process for requesting examination reports relying on the final results of a search established by IPOS under the PCT. Applicants will only be required to submit Patents Form 12 without having to file further documents. It will no longer be necessary to submit the final international search results, a copy of each document referred to in the final international search results, and a list of references to the patent family members corresponding to the documents.

Legislative Amendments to Patents (Patent Agents) Rules 2001

The Patents (Patent Agents) Rules 2001 have been updated from 16 August 2024. In particular, rule 4 has been amended to clarify that the Registrar’s publication of the relevant forms and directions will be on the IPOS website instead of in the journal.
