The Personal Data Protection Commission has launched a Proposed Guide on Synthetic Data Generation (“Guide“) to help organisations understand Synthetic Data (“SD“) generation techniques and potential use cases. SD generation is an increasingly utilised Privacy Enhancing Technology, utilising generally fictitious data that may not be considered personal data on its own. However, SD still carries the risk of possible re-identification, and the Guide thus seeks to address these risks by proposing good practices in the generation of SD. It also includes risk assessments/considerations, governance controls, contractual processes, and technical measures.
This Update highlights the key aspects of the Guide, including a summary of the key considerations and best practices in SD generation.
