Shuhei Otsuka is the Head of the long-standing Japanese Desk of Rajah & Tann Singapore and the Japan Business Unit of Rajah & Tann Asia.

Shuhei has assisted numerous Japanese companies as they expand into Singapore and Southeast Asia and face new challenges. Shuhei has extensive experience advising on Mergers & Acquisitions as well as corporate and commercial matters as the companies kicks off their operations. Further, with the local regional capabilities of Rajah & Tann, Shuhei has helped many Japanese companies manage compliance issues within/without their organizations, as well as regularly acts as counsel in dispute resolutions in SIAC and other arbitrations.

Prior to joining Rajah & Tann, Shuhei began his career as a Public Prosecutor working on the enforcement side for 8 years leading investigations of high profile cases, and subsequently at a global US-based consulting firm assisting Japanese companies expand to Asia and manage overseas business risks. At Rajah & Tann, Shuhei brings together his unique expertise from the enforcement side as well as the private practice side, advising many companies both on the reactive side of internal investigating as well as the proactive side of preventing corporate fraud. 

In addition to his role as a legal advisor, with his unique experience working in Japan and Singapore which has led him to cultivate a deep understanding of the differences in cultures, Shuhei helps to close the communication and cultural gaps between clients and counterparts, which is considered invaluable as the Japanese continue to expand in Asia.

Today, as Head of the Japan desk and the Japan Business Unit across Rajah & Tann Asia, Shuhei works closely with the Japanese clients across the region, with his colleagues across the network.

Shuhei is qualified to practice in Japan (Bengoshi), New York, England & Wales (Solicitor) and is also one of the few Japanese lawyers who is qualified to practice admitted areas of Singapore law under Singapore’s Foreign Practitioner Certificate Scheme. Shuhei also has an MBA degree from INSEAD, and also is a Certified Public Accountant (Japan).
