Tan Yong Joon Alvin is a Partner in the firm’s Competition & Antitrust and Trade practice.

Alvin holds a Bachelor of Business Management and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) law degree from the Singapore Management University. Prior to his completing his J.D. in 2013, Alvin spent several years in a central ministry, where he became acquainted with the structure and workings of the Singapore Government. Alvin’s main areas of practice comprise Trade, Environment, Health & Safety, Competition, Consumer Protection, and Employment.

Notable Cases & Transactions

Competition Law

On Competition law, Alvin advises on competition issues including anticompetitive agreements and abuse of dominance, etc. He has worked on matters stretching across a range of industries, including the logistics, manufacturing, insurance, shipping, shipbuilding, and construction industries. He has assisted clients who are being investigated by the competition authority, who require the competition authority’s formal guidance on competition matters as well as clients who are required by the competition authority to provide input towards investigations, amongst others.

Environmental & Sustainability

On Environment, Health & Safety law, Alvin advises on and has assisted clients in a variety of matters on health and safety concerns involving for example environmental pollution such as land, air, water, noise, etc, radiation spillage, food regulations, vector control, hazardous substances, as well as on regulatory requirements relating to workplaces including offices, factories, hospitals, cooling towers etc. He also advises extensively on environmental compliance issues for data centers. He also advises on sustainability matters including carbon trading, and has been involved in preparing ERPAs and other matters.

Trade Law

On Trade law, Alvin advises on licensing, import and export requirements, including for goods regulated by specific regulators such as telecommunication, industrial goods, radiation products, tobacco, drugs, health products, consumer electronics, food, toys, waste, etc. He also advises on requirements for strategic goods including strategic goods technology, as well as trade sanctions, etc.  He has also assisted clients in going through the Singapore Customs’ voluntary disclosure programme for violations of Customs regulations, helping them manage the process and the leniency plea. 

Consumer Protection Law

On Consumer Protection law, Alvin advises on unfair practices in violation of the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act, including those arising from e-commerce, and has assisted clients being investigated by the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore.

Employment Law

Alvin advises clients on a broad range of employment issues, ranging from recruitment and fair hiring, performance management, incentive schemes, misconduct, termination matters, redundancy, workplace safety and health, and whistle-blowing. On workplace safety and health, this includes advising on safety requirements in different workplace settings including factory and office settings, as well as regulatory requirements arising following COVID-19. He regularly advises clients on their employment contracts and employment policies, providing input on best practices as well, and is a regular trainer for employment law with a prominent business chamber in Singapore.

Others

In addition to the above, Alvin also assists clients on a wide range of corporate commercial matters including preparation of contractual documents such as master services agreements, collaboration agreements or sale and purchase agreements on varied subjects including on logistics, warehousing, and other services, as well as non-disclosure agreements and many others. He also advises clients on personal law.
