Rajah & Tann Singapore's Paul Tan Named a Top Young Lawyer Globally for Arbitration

Who’s Who Legal (WWL) has named Rajah & Tann Singapore’s Partner Paul Tan as one of the pre-eminent lawyers under 45 years old who will be a future leader of the arbitration profession.

The WWL research covers a total of 521 individuals made up of partners and non-partners with exemplary standing as arbitrators and counsel from the geographic regions, Europe, Americas and Rest of the World.

Mr Tan leads the Top 10 partners list for the Rest of the World category and is the only lawyer from a Singapore firm who has been ranked.

WWL, a sister publication of UK-based Global Arbitration Review and Global Restructuring Review, describes Mr Tan as a rising star who is very astute and commercial. He is “very sharp, easy to work with, grasps issues quickly and has his finger on the pulse of every evolution in the field in Singapore.” It also lauded him as “an exciting lawyer in the new generation” with “impressive commercial disputes practice and experience obtaining worldwide freezing orders to support significant recoveries.”

Managing Partner Lee Eng Beng, SC, said: “Rajah & Tann is very proud to have someone of Paul’s calibre and commitment in our disputes practice. He is an exemplary role model for many of the younger lawyers whom we are grooming for the next generation of lead partners. This latest recognition, after other global awards and accolades, comes as no surprise to those of us who have worked with him for many years.”

Mr Tan said: “I share this accolade with my clients and colleagues at Rajah & Tann who have been very supportive and delightful to work with. I hope this will inspire other young lawyers to always give their best and provide clients with the top-quality work that Rajah & Tann is known for.”

Mr Tan has also been named as a leading individual for International Arbitration in the recent launch of The Legal 500 – Asia Pacific 2018. He is the only one in his age band listed in this practice area, alongside several Senior Counsel and partners from international firms. Clients have lauded Mr Tan as “an ‘absolute star’ and a ‘senior counsel in waiting’, whose status has ascended for him to be ‘known outside Asia as a first-rate lawyer’ in investor-state disputes right through construction cases.”

Mr Tan is regularly instructed as lead counsel before international arbitral tribunals, the Singapore International Commercial Court and at the highest levels of the Singapore courts. His practice is often in the context of multijurisdictional commercial disputes between shareholders, joint venture partners, investors and states, and in the enforcement of arbitral awards and judgments, where issues of private and public international law arise. He is also co-authoring the forthcoming edition of Mustill and Boyd’s treatise on commercial and investment arbitration.

WWL is owned by Law Business Research, an independent London-based publishing group, which provides research, analysis and reports on the international legal services marketplace. Subscribers include leading international corporations, government agencies, law firms and individual private practitioners.

The Legal 500 Series is widely acknowledged as the world’s largest legal referral guide. Over 300,000 corporate counsel are surveyed and interviewed globally each year. The Legal 500 is an independent guide, and firms and individuals are recommended purely on merit.
