Rajah & Tann Singapore wins Best Domestic Arbitration Firm of the Year award, Paul Tan is Disputes Star Lawyer

Rajah & Tann Singapore has been named Best Domestic Arbitration Firm of the Year while its partner Paul Tan has won the Disputes Star of the Year at the second annual Asialaw Asia-Pacific Dispute Resolution Awards held in Hong Kong last night.

In addition to the above awards, Rajah & Tann Singapore was a finalist for best firm in the following practice areas: insolvency, insurance, TMT, labour and employment, shipping and maritime and tax.

Asialaw is a research house based in Hong Kong and the awards celebrate the foremost leaders in 12 practice areas across 14 jurisdictions in the region. The awards build on Asialaw's expertise in uncovering leading lawyers and firms in the Asia-Pacific region with individual award winners named for each country.

Accepting the firm awards at a gala dinner held at the Island Shangri-la last night, Deputy Managing Partner Rebecca Chew said: “Rajah & Tann is very honoured to have been voted Best Domestic Arbitration Firm of the Year in Singapore especially against competition from some of our peers whom we hold in high regard. It is an endorsement of the consistent high quality of our services to our clients. We are deeply committed to continue to provide all encompassing legal solutions to our clients in Singapore and the region.”

“We are especially proud of Paul Tan and delighted that Asialaw has recognised his achievements with the coveted Disputes Star of the Year award. Paul exemplifies the calibre of lawyers that Rajah & Tann continues to groom and develop.”

Mr Tan beat six other local and international dispute lawyers (including two Senior Counsel) to clinch the award. His practice includes multi-jurisdictional and joint venture disputes over financing agreements and natural resources in court and in arbitration, as well as public international law disputes involving States and State-owned entities. He recently won judgment before the Singapore International Commercial Court in relation to a joint venture dispute in which his client had suffered a $150 million loss under a non-recourse loan agreement with his Chinese counterparty. He has also won a hat trick of injunctions in the past year to enforce arbitration agreements to protect his clients’ interests in major construction and oilfield projects overseas. In addition, Mr Tan regularly argues before the Court of Appeal, most recently representing a subsidiary of Moscow-listed conglomerate in a dispute with its former managing director.

Mr Tan said: “The award is a reflection of the extraordinary international disputes practice at Rajah & Tann, which, with its extensive regional footprint, has given me the platform to cultivate my own practice. It is also a tribute to all the right moves that Singapore has taken to position itself as a disputes hub for Asia.

“I am indebted, as always, to the generosity of my mentors and the commitment of those I work with.”

The Asialaw awards follow another by the Financial Times earlier in the year where Rajah & Tann Singapore was named the Most Innovative Law Firm in ASEAN for the year at the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards. Last year, the firm also clinched Chambers & Partners’ top national law firm award for Singapore, the second time since 2013.

Rajah & Tann Singapore’s partners have also been recognised by New York-based ALM, publisher of The Asian Lawyer, The American Lawyer, and Corporate Counsel, as the Emerging Market Law Firm Leader of the Year and Maritime Lawyer of the Year. The firm also bagged Singapore’s Law Firm of the Year at the Who’s Who Legal Awards 2015 by London-based Law Business Research Limited.
